Obituary of George Knee
Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The family of Walter “George” Knee is profoundly saddened to announce his passing on February 17th, 2023 in Fort McMurray, Alberta, at the age of 90. Born on January 29th, 1933, in Badger’s Quay, Newfoundland, George was one of nine children. He started his working life as a seaman in the late 1940s but would soon find work as a pump serviceman in an iron ore mine for over 30 years in Schefferville, Quebec. There, he and his beloved wife, Annie of 67 years, who passed in 2019, would raise their seven children together before moving back to Newfoundland briefly, and then to Hinton, Alberta, and lastly, Fort McMurray, Alberta.
Anyone who knew George Knee would say he was a character, always the life of the party. He was also a wise man who, despite not having much education, was well-read and an avid news watcher. In his younger days, George enjoyed hunting and fishing to the fullest, but the thing he loved the most was his family. He leaves behind his sons Hubert (Bessie), Ted (Brenda), Earl (Bogna), and William and his daughters Marie (Peter) and Jennifer (Todd). Sadly, he was predeceased by his eldest daughter Christine, son-in-law Maurice Reimnitz, and his dear wife, Annie (Brown).
To his 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, George was known as Poppy. It is hard to put into words how much he loved them all and how much they will all miss him. Also left to mourn his passing is his only remaining sibling Marie Brown of Sandringham, Newfoundland.
George’s family would like to thank the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre in Fort McMurray for the care he received in his final days. A Celebration of Life will take place later in the spring.
Until we meet again…love you always, Dad.
