Obituary of Patricia Louise Hickman
Patricia (Pat) Hickman (nee Follett), passed away peacefully at home in the presence of her loving family in Fort McMurray, Alberta, just four days shy of her sixty-fourth birthday. Pat succumbed to complications following a courageous thirteen-year battle with Berger’s Disease.
Pat is survived by her devoted husband of forty-four years: David Hickman; Daughter: Janene Hickman (Brent); Son: Bryan Hickman (Jen); Grandchildren: Bailey and Logan; Siblings: Gertie(Cecil), Beulah(John), Clyde (Pat), Ernest (Barb), Carl (Linda), Eleanor; Mother-in-Law: Margaret Piercey; Sisters-in-law: Marilyn (Ted), Bridget (Reuben); Pat (Clyde); Brother-in-law Neil (Dawn); and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pat is predeceased by parents, Stanley and Stella Follett, Father-in-law Reuben Hickman, Step Father-in-Law, Edwin Piercey, Brother-in-Law, Reuben Hickman, Nephews Sheldon and John Follett, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Anyone who knew Pat will remember her bright smile, generous heart, and strong will. Prior to becoming ill, Pat was known for her strong work ethic and strength. An early retirement after working in Fort McMurray, AB. allowed her to return to the east coast to help raise her two grandchildren. Despite the physical and emotional toll of almost 13 years of dialysis treatment resulting from kidney disease, Pat maintained a strong sense of humor and hope, and enjoyed a simple life focused on family. As her quality of life declined, Pat shared openly her desire to make decisions about her life, and her death, and with the support of her family, and in consultation with her God, her wishes were gracefully honored. She has left a legacy of unparalleled toughness for her children and grandchildren to follow.
Pat’s journey would unquestionably have been much harder if not for the support of her devoted husband, Dave, who offered everything to care of his beloved wife. Never one to complain, he provided her with unwavering companionship and care. As her illness progressed, he walked the journey with her, hand in hand. Lucy, her cherished dog, was also never far from her side.
In keeping with Pat’s wishes, cremation and no formal service will take place. A celebration of her life will be held by her family at a later date.
Pat requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the Hemodialysis Unit at Northern Lights Health Foundation in Fort McMurray, AB.
The family would like to offer thanks to Pat’s many health care providers, especially the staff and friends of the Hemodialysis Unit.
In Loving Memory
