Obituary of Peter Andrew Powder

Please share a memory of Peter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Peter “Baby Doll” Andrew Powder, a devoted leader and former Chief of Mikisew Cree First Nation, passed away on May 6, 2023, at the age of 62 years at the University of Alberta Hospital. Born on March 22, 1961, in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta, Peter was a compassionate and kind-hearted individual who made a significant difference in the lives of those around him.

During his professional career, Peter worked as a Millwright for Syncrude for many years, dedicating himself to his craft. However, it was passion for fishing, hunting, hockey and baseball that truly defined his spirit. Peter found immense joy in these activities and shared his enthusiasm with others, encouraging them, particularly the youth, to participate in sports and lead and active lifestyle.

Above all, Peter cherished his role as a father and grandfather, loving his children more than life itself. He was a pillar of support and an unwavering source of love for his children: Keith (Leah) Tuccaro, Bobby (Trista) Shott, Vanessa Shott, Trent (Angie) Shott, Raegan Powder, Rhea Powder and Reese Powder. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Tyrell, Dominic, Samuel, Tyrese, Brittany, Reese, Charlot, Nole, Trace, Adele, Tasha, Bryson and Brielle.

Peter will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his loving sisters: Loretta (Jay) McKay and Vina (Gary) Powder. He was predeceased by his grandmother Rosalie Marten, parents Reginald and Mary McKay; sisters: Valerie, Arlene and Wanda McKay; brothers: Roland McKay and Albert (Moon) Powder, as well as nephews, Jade and Liam McKay. Peter’s extended family includes numerous aunties, uncles, nieces and nephews, all of whom mourn his passing and carry the memories of his remarkable spirit.

Peter was a leader in every sense of the word, advocating for his community and inspiring others through his compassionate heart and kindness. He firmly believed in the power of being kind and always lead by example, encouraging everyone around him to do the same. His infectious smile and ever-present chuckle brightened the lives of those he encountered, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.

Peter “Baby Doll” Andrew Powder’s legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a community that is stronger and more compassionate because of his unwavering dedication to making a difference. As we bid farewell to our beloved leader, let us honour his memory by continuing to lead with kindness, just as he did throughout his life.
