Obituary of Douglas Victor Penny

It is with profound sadness, that the family of Douglas Victor Penny of Fort McMurray, AB. announce his passing on Tuesday, September 5^th, 2023 following a courageous battle with melanoma cancer.  He was 68 years old. A burial has taken place at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Fort McMurray, AB. on Friday, September 8^th, 2023.

Doug is survived by his loving wife Joan Penny; his beloved daughter, Kimberly Penny; and grandchildren:  Zachary, Dylan, and Katelyn Rohovich; his siblings: Sharon Penny of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Larry (Carla) Penny of Makkovik, Labrador, and Dan (Karen) Penny of Summerside, PEI; as well his numerous nieces and nephews.  Doug was preceded by his parents: Bruce and Dorcas Penny, and his sister, Jean Penny.

Doug grew up in Labrador and treasured the many fishing and hunting trips with friends.  At the age of 24, he left his job as a firefighter in Goose Bay and ventured across Canada where he began his next chapter of life in Fort McMurray.  In 1979, Doug joined the Syncrude Fire Department and made Fort McMurray his home for him and his family.  Doug had a special love for his grandchildren, and was always eager to see their smiling faces. He enjoyed cooking and prepared many delicious meals.  He had a passion for aviation and loved to share his flying stories.  Doug forged lasting relationships throughout his lifetime.  He was well known for his commitment to the Fort McMurray Golf Course and The Men’s Dart League.   Doug was a pillar of strength, wisdom, and kindness.  He leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will continue to inspire us all.  Doug will be fondly remembered by his loving family and friends.

Doug’s family would like to extend their gratitude to all friends who came to visit him in hospital.  He cherished each visit and appreciated the generosity from all.  Thank you to the amazing nurses and the Jeremy Snook Foundation responsible for the Palliative Care suite.  A special thank you to the Fort McMurray Golf Course for hosting a Celebration of Life for Doug.
